The Uniqueness of God

God Is Spirit

“God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” —John 4:24

God Is One

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!” —Deuteronomy 6:4, 5

God Is of One Essence

“The Father and I are one.” —John 10:30; 14:9

God Is Three Persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” —Matthew 28:19

The Nature of God

God Is All-knowing (Omniscient)

And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account. —Hebrews 4:13

The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on those who are evil and those who are good. —Proverbs 15:3

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how unfathomable his ways! —Romans 11:33

God Is All-powerful (Omnipotent)

By the Lord’s decree the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all the starry hosts. He piles up the water of the sea; he puts the oceans in storehouses. Let the whole earth fear the Lord. Let all who live in the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and it came into existence. He issued the decree, and it stood firm. —Psalm 33:6-9

Moses said to the people, “Remember this day on which you came out from Egypt, from the place where you were enslaved, for the Lord brought you out of there with a mighty hand—and no bread made with yeast may be eaten.” —Exodus 13:3

[A]nd what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, as displayed in the exercise of his immense strength. This power he exercised in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms far above every rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And God put all things under Christ’s feet, and gave him to the church as head over all things. —Ephesians 1:19–22

God Is All-present (Omnipresent)

He himself is before all things and all things are held together in him. —Colossians 1:17

Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee to escape your presence? If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be. If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn, and settle down on the other side of the sea, even there your hand would guide me, your right hand would grab hold of me. If I were to say, “Certainly the darkness will cover me, and the light will turn to night all around me,” even the darkness is not too dark for you to see, and the night is as bright as day; darkness and light are the same to you. —Psalm 139:7–12

“Do you people think that I am some local deity and not the transcendent God?” the Lord asks. “Do you really think anyone can hide himself where I cannot see him?” the Lord asks. “Do you not know that I am everywhere?” the Lord asks. —Jeremiah 23:23-24

God Is Eternal

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer Sheba. There he worshiped the Lord, the eternal God. —Genesis 21:33

He alone possesses immortality and lives in unapproachable light, whom no human has ever seen or is able to see. To him be honor and eternal power! Amen. —1 Timothy 6:16

God Is Self-existent (Independent and Uncreated)

He also said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the one who is thirsty I will give water free of charge from the spring of the water of life. —Revelation 21:6

“For just as the Father has life in himself, thus he has granted the Son to have life in himself.” —John 5:26

God Is Unchanging (Immutable)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” —Hebrews 13:8

“[A]nd like a robe you will fold them up and like a garment they will be changed, but you are the same and your years will never run out.” —Hebrews 1:12

The Moral Character of God

God Is Just

He will treat the poor fairly, and make right decisions for the downtrodden of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and order the wicked to be executed. Justice will be like a belt around his waist, integrity will be like a belt around his hips. —Isaiah 11:4–5

God Is Righteous

As for the Almighty, we cannot attain to him! He is great in power, but justice and abundant righteousness he does not oppress. —Job 37:23

The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. —2 Peter 3:9

God Is Loving

God is love. —1 John 4:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8

The Lord said to me, “Go, show love to your wife again, even though she loves another man and continually commits adultery. Likewise, the Lord loves the Israelites although they turn to other gods and love to offer raisin cakes to idols.” —Hosea 3:1

God Is Merciful

But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and merciful God. You are patient and demonstrate great loyal love and faithfulness. —Psalm 86:15

But “when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, he saved us not by works of righteousness that we have done but on the basis of his mercy, through the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us in full measure through Jesus Christ our Savior.” —Titus 3:4–6

They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt.
