Spiritual maturity is the intentional, lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus Christ in every area of life. The following ten building blocks represent key areas in which believers continue to grow deeper and deeper, gaining greater understanding and conformity to Christ, so they can become all that God created them to be and do all that God created them to do.
Just as a building requires a strong foundation and solid blocks stacked with care, our faith grows through these essential disciplines and perspectives that shape us over a lifetime. They provide a practical framework for every follower of Christ—new believers and seasoned disciples alike—to pursue growth to become “a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christ’s full stature” (Ephesians 4:13).
10 Building Blocks for Maturity
Lifelong Spiritual Growth Areas for All Christ’s Disciples (or, All Followers of Christ)
Building Block 1. Seeing Your Life from God’s Perspective
“Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness.” —Matthew 6:22–23
Everything begins with perspective. Our natural way of seeing life is shaped by upbringing, education, experiences, successes, and failures. These form core convictions that influence what we value and how we respond to circumstances.
Jesus taught that a “good eye” (a God-centered worldview) fills our entire life with light, while a distorted perspective brings darkness. What we believe determines how we behave, and both determine what we become.
Practical step: Regularly ask, “How does God see this situation?” Replace cultural or self-centered assumptions with biblical truth. Over time, this renewed perspective brings clarity, hope, and alignment with God’s purposes.
Building Block 2. Growing Closer to God
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” —Matthew 22:37
At the center of spiritual life is an ever-deepening relationship with God Himself. Everything about our lives—our attitudes, motives, desires, actions, and even our words—is influenced by our view of God and our relationship with Him. This is not mere religious duty but a loving, personal connection cultivated through prayer, worship, and time in His presence. Knowing His character ever more deeply through prayer, worship, and time in His presence will cultivate a loving, personal connection with God.
Seeking God means pursuing Him intentionally—making Him the priority of our hearts. As we draw near, He draws near to us (James 4:8).
Practical step: Set aside daily time to seek God’s face to know His nature and character. Talk with Him honestly, listen through Scripture, and express love through obedience and praise. A close relationship with God fuels every other area of maturity.
Building Block 3. Becoming the New You
“So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away—look, what is new has come!” —2 Corinthians 5:17
When we come to Christ, we are not improved versions of our old selves—we are brand new creations. Our identity is no longer defined by past failures, labels, or achievements, but by who we are in Christ.
Living in Christ means rejecting old patterns and adopting our true identity as God’s beloved children, forgiven, accepted, and empowered.
Practical step: Daily remind yourself of your new identity through Scripture. Speak truths like “I am a child of God,” “I am forgiven,” and “I am empowered by the Holy Spirit.” This shifts behavior from striving to resting in grace.
Building Block 4. Walking by the Spirit
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with the Spirit.” —Galatians 5:25
The Christian life is impossible in our own strength. The Holy Spirit lives within every believer, providing power, guidance, comfort, and conviction.
Depending on the Spirit’s empowerment means yielding daily to His leadership rather than relying on willpower alone. As we regularly walk by the Spirit, He will produce fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, and more—in our lives.
Practical step: Before decisions or difficult moments, pause and ask the Holy Spirit for help. Practice listening to His gentle promptings and obey quickly. Walking by the Spirit turns ordinary days into adventures with God.
Building Block 5. Receiving Insights from God
“Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.” —Romans 12:2
God’s Word is our primary source of truth and direction. The Bible is not just an ancient book—it is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), able to renew our thinking and reveal God’s will.
Trusting the Bible and its authority means reading it regularly, studying it deeply, and applying it practically. As our minds are renewed, we increasingly discern what pleases God.
Practical step: Develop a consistent Bible-reading habit. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate passages, then obey what you learn. Memorize and memorize key verses to carry God’s truth throughout your day.
Building Block 6. Obeying God Faithfully
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” —John 14:15
Love for God is proven through obedience. Holiness is not about rigid rule-keeping but about living in ways that honor and reflect God’s character.
Pursuing holy living involves saying “no” to sin and “yes” to righteousness, empowered by grace. It touches every area—thoughts, words, relationships, and habits.
Practical step: Identify areas of compromise and bring them under God’s authority. Replace sinful patterns with godly ones through accountability, prayer, and reliance on the Spirit. Obedience deepens intimacy with God and brings freedom.
Building Block 7. Living as God’s Family
“Now you are Christ’s body, and each of you is a member of it.” —1 Corinthians 12:27
No believer is meant to walk alone. The Church is God’s family—a community of believers who encourage, challenge, serve, and grow together.
Involving yourself with the Family of God means committing to a local church, using your gifts, and building meaningful relationships.
Practical step: Attend regularly, join a small group, and serve others. Be vulnerable and willing to both give and receive support. A healthy community protects us from isolation and accelerates maturity.
Building Block 8. Reaching the World
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” —Matthew 28:19-20
God’s mission is global. Every believer is called to participate in making disciples—whether through personal evangelism, supporting missions, or living as a witness in daily life.
Helping to fulfill the Great Commission shifts our focus outward. We exist not only to enjoy God but also to help others know Him.
Practical step: Pray for opportunities to share your faith. Use your vocation, hobbies, and relationships as platforms for the gospel. Support missionaries and engage in acts of compassion that open doors for truth.
Building Block 9. Resisting the Enemy
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” —Ephesians 6:12
Spiritual warfare is real because God expands His Kingdom against the domain of darkness through His people. Satan seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but we are equipped to stand firm.
Resisting temptation and Satan’s schemes involves putting on the full armor of God—truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer.
Practical step: Stay alert to common tactics (deception, accusation, temptation). Respond with Scripture, prayer, and accountability. Remember that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
Building Block 10. Pursuing God’s Master Plan
“For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.” —Ephesians 2:10
God has a unique purpose for each life. He prepares good works in advance and equips us to accomplish them.
Embracing God’s will and master plan means surrendering our plans to His and walking in step with His providence.
Practical step: Seek God’s direction through prayer, Scripture, wise counsel, and circumstances. Steward your time, talents, and resources for His glory. Trust that He works all things for good as you follow Him.
Building a Life of Eternal Significance
These ten building blocks are interconnected. Growth in one area strengthens the others. Maturity is not achieved overnight but through daily faithfulness over a lifetime.
No matter your age or stage in faith, these areas provide a roadmap for becoming the person God created you to be. Start where you are. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight one or two areas for focused attention. As you build on the foundation of Christ, your life will increasingly reflect His light, love, and purpose—for His glory and the good of those around you.
May you grow strong in the Lord and finish well.
