21018.08 Renew Your Mind

Renewing your mind means transforming your perspective to align with God’s Word and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, rather than being influenced by your own experiences or the world’s values.

* * * * *

“Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.” —Romans 12:2

How to Renew Your Mind

Make God’s Word a Priority in Your Life

“My child, pay attention to my words; listen attentively to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your sight, guard them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and healing to one’s entire body. Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it are the sources of life.” —Proverbs 4:20-23

Focus Your Mind on God’s Word

“Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth.” —Colossians 3:1-2

“For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit.” —Romans 8:5

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things.” —Philippians 4:8

Ask the Holy Spirit to Help You Understand God’s Word

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come.” —John 16:13

“Open my eyes so I can truly see the marvelous things in your law!” —Psalm 119:18

Meditate on God’s Word

“Instead he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands; he meditates on his commands day and night.” —Psalm 1:2

Memorize God’s Word

“This law scroll must not leave your lips! You must memorize it day and night so you can carefully obey all that is written in it. Then you will prosper and be successful.” —Joshua 1:8

Trust God’s Word

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight.” —Proverbs 3:5-6

Reject Thoughts Contrary to God’s Word

“We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ.” —2 Corinthians 10:4b-5

Apply God’s Word to Your Life

“For if someone merely listens to the word and does not live it out, he is like someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror. For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what sort of person he was. But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, and does not become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out—he will be blessed in what he does.” —James 1:23-25

“With all my heart I seek you. Do not allow me to stray from your commands! I store up your words in my heart, so that I might not sin against you.” —Psalm 119:10-11

Delight in God’s Word

“I find delight in your statutes; I do not forget your instructions.” —Psalm 119:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God.” —Colossians 3:16

The Superiority of God’s Word

God’s Word Is Pure

“Every word of God is purified; he is like a shield for those who take refuge in him.” —Proverbs 30:5

God’s Word Is Truth

“Set them apart in the truth; your word is truth.” —John 17:17

“For the Lord’s decrees are just, and everything he does is fair.” —Psalm 33:4

God’s Word Is Reliable

“The grass dries up, the flowers wither, but the decree of our God is forever reliable.” —Isaiah 40:8

God’s Word Is Permanent

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” —Matthew 24:35

God’s Word Reveals God

“Above all, you do well if you recognize this: No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet’s own imagination, for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” —2 Peter 1:20-21

“’Indeed, my plans are not like your plans, and my deeds are not like your deeds,’ says the Lord.” —Isaiah 55:8

“Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you.” —John 14:16-17

Jesus Values God’s Word

Jesus Loved/Treasured/Revered God’s Word

“I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me, but I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father.” —John 14:30-31

Jesus Understood God’s Word

“Jesus answered them, ‘You are deceived, because you don’t know the scriptures or the power of God.’” —Matthew 22:29

Jesus Obeyed God’s Word

“‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!’” —Luke 11:28b

Jesus Depended on God’s Word

Jesus Proclaimed God’s Word

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on rock.” —Matthew 7:24

The Benefits of God’s Word

The Spirit Is Ever-present

“Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee to escape your presence? If I were to ascend to the sky, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be.” —Psalm 139:7–8

The Spirit Is Good

The Spirit Is Holy

“Do not reject me. Do not take your Holy Spirit away from me.” —Psalm 51:11

The Spirit Knows Everything

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come.” —John 16:13

Works of the Holy Spirit

The Spirit Gives Life

“The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” —John 6:63

“‘The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.’” —Job 33:4

The Spirit Convicts of Sin

“‘But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment—concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.’” —John 16:7-11

The Spirit Regenerates Us

“…he saved us, not by works of righteousness that we have done but on the basis of his mercy, through the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit,…” —Titus 3:5

The Spirit Indwells Us

“…the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you.” —John 14:17

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?” —1 Corinthians 3:16

The Spirit Seals Believers

“And when you heard the word of truth (the gospel of your salvation) – when you believed in Christ – you were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit,…” —Ephesians 1:13

The Spirit Assures of Salvation

“The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children.” —Romans 8:16

The Spirit Teaches

“‘But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you.’” —John 14:26

The Spirit Intercedes

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how we should pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes on behalf of the saints according to God’s will.” —Romans 8:26-27

The Spirit Reveals Things of God

“But just as it is written, ‘Things that no eye has seen, or ear heard, or mind imagined, are the things God has prepared for those who love him.’ God has revealed these to us by the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the things of a man except the man’s spirit within him? So too, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things that are freely given to us by God. And we speak about these things, not with words taught us by human wisdom, but with those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people.” —1 Corinthians 2:9-13

The Spirit Inspires

“…for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” —2 Peter 1:21

The Spirit Fills Believers

“And do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit,…” —Ephesians 5:18

And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” —Acts 13:52

The Spirit Distributes Gifts

“Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all.… It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things.” —1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 11

The Spirit Empowers for Ministry

“‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.’” —Acts 1:8

The Spirit Anoints for Service

“‘And you have an anointing from the Holy One and know all things.’” —1 John 2:20

“‘And as for you, the anointing you received from him resides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things, it is true and is not a lie. Just as it has taught you, you reside in him.’” —1 John 2:27

The Spirit Glorifies Christ

“He will glorify me, because he will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you.” —John 16:14

21018.04 Identity in Christ

“You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and to put on the new man who has been created in God’s image—in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth.” —Ephesians 4:22-24

A Child of God

“But to all who have received him—those who believe in his name—he has given the right to become God’s children.” —John 1:12

“And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, who calls ‘Abba! Father!’” —Galatians 4:6

“See what sort of love the Father has given to us: that we should be called God’s children—and indeed we are! For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know him.” —1 John 3:1

A Co-Heir with Christ

“The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children. And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ)—if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.” —Romans 8:16-17

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you, …” —1 Peter 1:4

“And when you heard the word of truth (the gospel of your salvation)—when you believed in Christ—you were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit, who is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.” —Ephesians 1:13-14

A Saint with Divine Nature

“From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the saints, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ, at Colossae. Grace and peace to you from God our Father! We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the saints. Your faith and love have arisen from the hope laid up for you in heaven, …” —Colossians 1:1-5

“Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire.” —2 Peter 1:4

A Member of the Body of Christ

“Now you are Christ’s body, and each of you is a member of it.” —1 Corinthians 12:27

“For just as in one body we have many members, and not all the members serve the same function, so we who are many are one body in Christ, and individually we are members who belong to one another.” —Romans 12:4-5

“But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together through every supporting ligament. As each one does its part, the body builds itself up in love.” —Ephesians 4:15-16

A Citizen of Christ’s Kingdom

“But our citizenship is in heaven—and we also eagerly await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,” —Philippians 3:20

An Ambassador of Reconciliation

Baptized into Christ Jesus

“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” —Galatians 3:27

“For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body—though many—are one body, so too is Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit.” —1 Corinthians 12:12-13

Blessed / Chosen

“Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ. For he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and blameless before him in love. He did this by predestining us to adoption as his legal heirs through Jesus Christ, according to the pleasure of his will— to the praise of the glory of his grace that he has freely bestowed on us in his dearly loved Son.” —Ephesians 1:3-6

Adopted

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ)—if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.” —Romans 8:15–17

Forgiven

“And even though you were dead in your transgressions and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he nevertheless made you alive with him, having forgiven all your transgressions. He has destroyed what was against us, a certificate of indebtedness expressed in decrees opposed to us. He has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.” —Colossians 2:13-14

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our offenses, according to the riches of his grace” —Ephesians 1:7

No Longer Condemned

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the life-giving Spirit in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” —Romans 8:1-2

“And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” —2 Corinthians 3:18

Assured of Eternal Life

“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” —1 John 5:11-13

Dead to Sin

“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that since Christ has been raised from the dead, he is never going to die again; death no longer has mastery over him. For the death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you too consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” —Romans 6: 8-11

Jesus Is the Prophesied Messiah

His Virgin Birth

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the virgin is about to conceive and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him Immanuel.” —Isaiah 7:14

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Now all this happened to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: ‘Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him Emmanuel,’ which means ‘God with us.’” —Matthew 1:18,22-23

His Bethlehem Birthplace

His Death for Mankind

“But he lifted up our illnesses, he carried our pain; even though we thought he was being punished, attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, crushed because of our sins; he endured punishment that made us well; because of his wounds we have been healed. All of us had wandered off like sheep; each of us had strayed off on his own path, but the Lord caused the sin of all of us to attack him.” —Isaiah 53:4-6

“For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also came through a man.” —1 Corinthians 15:21

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning and live for righteousness. By his wounds you were healed.” —1 Peter 2:24

His Betrayal

“I then said to them, ‘If it seems good to you, pay me my wages, but if not, forget it.’ So they weighed out my payment – thirty pieces of silver. The Lord then said to me, ‘Throw to the potter that exorbitant sum at which they valued me!’ So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the temple of the Lord. And one will say to him, ‘What are these wounds on your chest?’ and he will answer, ‘Some that I received in the house of my friends.’” —Zechariah 11:12-13; 13:6

“Then one of the twelve, the one named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What will you give me to betray him into your hands?’ So they set out thirty silver coins for him. Then when Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus had been condemned, he regretted what he had done and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders, saying, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood!’ But they said, ‘What is that to us? You take care of it yourself!’ So Judas threw the silver coins into the temple and left.” —Matthew 26:14-16; 27:3-10

His Crucifixion

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?… My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; An evil gang closes in on me… They have pierced my hands and feet. They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing. —Psalm 22:1, 16, 18

And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take… From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’” —Mark 15:24, 33–34

His Resurrection

He Rose from the Dead

“So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)” —John 20:3-9

For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen, ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” —1 Corinthians 15:51-5?

He Will Reign as King Over His New Creation

21018.06 Walking in the Spirit

“Walking in the Spirit” is a biblical term that refers to living a life that is guided by the Holy Spirit — allowing Him to guide your thoughts, words, and actions.

* * * * *

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with the Spirit.” —Galatians 5:25

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.” —Romans 8:14

“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” —Galatians 2:20

Barriers to Walking in the Spirit

Prideful Self-reliance

“For the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.” —Romans 8:7

Worldliness

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions) is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever.” —1 John 2:15–17

Approval of Others

“The fear of people becomes a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord will be set on high.” —Proverbs 29:25

Lack of Faith

“Now without faith it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” —Hebrews 11:6

Unconfessed Sin

“But your sinful acts have alienated you from your God; your sins have caused him to reject you and not listen to your prayers.” —Isaiah 59:2

Be Filled by the Spirit

Desire to Live by the Spirit

“But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” —Galatians 5:16-18

Confess Your Sins to God

“But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.” —1 John 1:9

Surrender to the Spirit

“Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice–alive, holy, and pleasing to God–which is your reasonable service.” —Romans 12:1

Live Spirit-filled by Faith

“And do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for each other in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” —Ephesians 5:18-21

Abide in Christ

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.” —John 15:4

Renew Your Mind

“Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God–what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.”—Romans 12:2

Depend on God

“Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as if it were coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God,…” —2 Corinthians 3:5

Be Humbly Concerned About Others

“Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself. Each of you should be concerned not only about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well.” —Philippians 2:3-4

Seek God’s Approval

“Am I now trying to gain the approval of people, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ!” —Galatians 1:10

Understand God’s Will

“For this reason we also, from the day we heard about you, have not ceased praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may live worthily of the Lord and please him in all respects—bearing fruit in every good deed, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for the display of all patience and steadfastness, joyfully giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.” —Colossians 1:9-12

Expect Above and Beyond

“Now to him who by the power that is working within us is able to do far beyond all that we ask or think, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” —Ephesians 3:20-21

“Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer.” —Romans 12:12

“And we urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish the undisciplined, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient toward all.” —1 Thessalonians 5:14

Kindness

“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another,…” —Colossians 3:12-13

“Instead, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.” —Ephesians 4:32

“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people.” —Luke 6:35

Goodness

“I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another.” —Romans 15:14

“So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.” —Galatians 6:10

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” —2 Peter 1:5-7

Faithfulness
