Idolatry is another barrier to knowing God intimately. Only God has the right to be the center of our lives. And yet, we are often tempted to elevate someone else or something to that highest place of priority. Why? Because we are convinced this substitute for God will give the love we crave, the security we desire and the purpose for life we need.
The apostle Paul warns,
Therefore, my dearly beloved, shun, keep clear away from and avoid by flight if need be, any sort of idolatry, of loving or venerating anything more than God. (1 Corinthians 10:14, AMP)
Who or what does your life revolve around? Are you obsessed with some thing? Is there someone who is receiving a level of devotion from you that rightfully belongs to God? If you want to experience the incredible relationship that God is offering you, then you must “… keep yourselves from idols.” (1 John 5:21, NIV).
