23325 Worship God with Songs of Praise

But be filled by the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:18-19)

We are to sing and make music in our hearts to the Lord.

When God instructed Moses and instituted worship, he was precise about the construction of the Tabernacle and all the instruments used in the Tabernacle. However, there was no mention of music. (see the following chapters: Exodus 25-40; Leviticus 1-9, 16, 23; Numbers 7-9, 28, 29)

It is not that there was no music or that none sang songs. Musical instruments were first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 4:21 at the beginning of human civilization. When God led the people of Israel out from Egypt, they praised him with songs, “with hand drums and with dances” (Exodus 15:20). Later, David added musical instruments and singers to worship.

King David was called a man after God’s own heart. At the end of his life, he described himself as “David son of Jesse”, “the man raised up as the ruler chosen by the God of Jacob”, and “Israel’s beloved singer of songs” (2 Samuel 23:1). He was a warrior-poet.

God did not specify music in Tabernacle worship, and David later incorporated it into worship. God desires us to use music in worship to honor and praise him. He is delighted if we creatively express our love for him in music.

Music is powerful. It is a gift of God to humanity. It is the language of our hearts.
