41201 Methods of Evangelism

1.  Roman Road: Some people share Christ using the following verses from the book of Romans — Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Romans 5:8; Romans 10:9-10; and Romans 5:1.  Stick with these verses in this order.

2.  Share Jesus Without Fear by Bill Fay starts with the 5 questions which are:

  • Do you have any kind of spiritual beliefs?
  • To you, who is Jesus?
  • Do you believe in heaven and hell?
  • If you died, where would you go?  If they say, “Heaven”, ask Why? Or ask “Why would God let you in?
  • If what you believe is not true would you want to know?

Then ask the person they are witnessing to read out loud these verses asking the person “What does this mean to you?”.  These verses are:  Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; John 3:3; John 14:6; Romans 10:9-10; 2 Corinthians 5:15 and Revelation 3:20.

3.  Evangelism Explosion International is a 16-week training and equipping course that is often used in churches where there is a Trainer and two Trainees.  The trainer and trainee will visit the unsaved visitors to the church and share a 5-point Gospel presentation that they memorize during the 16 weeks of training. Once the 16-week course is completed, the two trainees become trainers and recruit two trainees to go through another session of the evangelism training. The basic outline of Evangelism Explosion is:

  • Heaven is a free gift.  It is not earned or deserved.
  • Man is a sinner.  He cannot save himself.
  • God is love and He doesn’t want to punish us.  He is also Just and therefore He must punish sin.
  • Christ: Who He Is:  He is the Infinite God-Man.
  • Christ: What He Did:  By His death and physical resurrection He purchased a place for us (in Heaven that He offers as a free gift, that is received by:
  • Faith is the Key that opens the door to Heaven
  • What it isn’t:  Saving faith is not just head knowledge about God or turning to God for temporary needs.
  • What it is:  It is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for our eternal life both now and forever.

4.  Alpha Course is an evangelistic course that seeks to introduce the basics of the Christian faith through a series of talks and discussions. Alpha courses are run in churches, prisons, homes, workplaces, etc.

5.  The Way of the Master (TWOTM) approach to evangelism popularized by Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron uses 4 main questions with the acronym:

  • Would you consider yourself a good person? This approach starts out with the first question. Then, you list some specific sins such as lying, stealing, adultery (Matthew 5:27-28), etc.  Thus, since the person has broken God’s law, he or she must pay for that sin.  Man cannot pay for his sin.
  • Do you think you have kept the Ten Commandments?
  • If you were judged by the Ten Commandments, would you be guilty or innocent?
  • Destiny: Do you think you will go to heaven or hell based on that judgment?

This approach stresses the use of God’s moral law from the Ten Commandments to show people their sin and their need for a savior.  It is one of many methods in evangelism.

6.  Friendship Evangelism is the idea that you develop and nurture friendships with people with the idea of eventually proclaiming the gospel to that person.  Dr. Joel Aldrich wrote classic books on Friendship Evangelism titled:  Lifestyle Evangelism and Gentle Persuasion that develops this approach.  The drawback on this method is that the person who is a Christian may never get around to proclaiming their faith or if the non-Christian who is befriended never receives Christ, sometimes they are discarded.

6.  Witnessing Tracts are a concise Gospel presentation that you can go through with someone personally or give them out.  I encourage to memorize the outline of the tract in the event you are witnessing to someone but don’t have a tract with you to give to that person.

Here Are Some Tracts

Have You Heard of the Four Spiritual Laws by Cru has 4 main points:

  1. God loves you, and offers a wonderful plan for your life.
  2. Man is sinful and separated from God. Therefore, he cannot know and experience God’s love and plan for his life.
  3. Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin.  Through Him you can know an experience God’s plan for your life.
  4. We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; Then we can know and experience God’s  love and plan for our lives.

Crossway Good News Tracts is a great resource for many tracts.

Why Use Gospel Tracts

  • Tracts are a testimony to God’s Word and are “cliff notes” on the Gospel.
  • Tracts can be read many times over and are often read by another person.
  • Tracts are portable and can easily be carried in your pocket or purse.
  • They are easy to pass out.
  • In out busy culture, people often don’t have time to read a lot so a Tract and zero in on the simple Gospel message.
  • A Tract can keep you on track in sharing your faith without getting sidetracked when you share Christ.

Churches and ministries often use surveys in the community, at parks, on the beach to find out where people are at spiritually and to engage people and then share a Tract with them.  Cru will often go to beaches in their training and take surveys and then share the Four Spiritual Laws.

You can also share a Tract with a friend, relative or an acquaintance by asking:  “If you have time, and if you want to, I’d love to go through this (tract) with you.” If they say okay, you can read the Tract with them.  If they say “no”, then offer them the Tract to read on their own.  If you can read – you can lead someone to faith in Christ!
